Why Javanese only bring jasmine and roses to cemetery. Not other flowers?

In Javanese culture, the choice of jasmine (melati) and roses (mawar) for cemetery visits isn’t random — it has deep layers of meaning tied to symbolism, tradition, and mysticism. ๐ŸŒน✨

Here are the main reasons:

  1. Symbolism of Purity and Love

    • Jasmine (melati) symbolizes purity, sincerity, and sacredness. It’s a small, white, fragrant flower — seen as clean and simple, suitable for honoring the spirits of ancestors.

    • Rose (mawar) symbolizes love, respect, and beauty. Red roses often represent devotion, while white roses represent sincerity.

  2. Traditional Rituals (Ziarah Kubur)

    • In Javanese and Islamic tradition, flowers are sprinkled over graves during ziarah as a sign of respect and prayer for the deceased.

    • Jasmine and roses are commonly available, strongly scented, and considered “halus” (refined) compared to larger or gaudy flowers.

  3. Mystical and Spiritual Aspect

    • Fragrance is believed to attract good spirits and ward off negative ones. Jasmine and roses both have a strong, pleasant aroma, unlike many other flowers.

    • They are considered flowers with daya spiritual (spiritual energy) that harmonize with the soul of the deceased.

  4. Cultural Aesthetics

    • Javanese people often value kesederhanaan (simplicity) and keanggunan (grace). Jasmine and roses are seen as elegant and modest choices, unlike exotic or flashy flowers.

  5. Practical Aspect

    • Both flowers are abundant in Java, easy to grow, and available in markets, which made them the traditional choice historically.

That’s why you’ll rarely see chrysanthemums, orchids, or other flowers at cemeteries in Java. The culture crystallized around melati and mawar because they balance spiritual symbolism, availability, and aesthetics.

  • Bintang Daud untuk perlindungan

  • Nama-nama seperti Salomo, Daud, Abraham, Ruben

  • Ornamen Perjamuan untuk menyamarkan sebagai Kristen

EYANG KAKUNG & CAKRABIRAWA

Eyang Kakung adalah anggota pengawal presiden Soekarno. Lalu diminta pulang H-1 oleh kakak eyang Kakung ( Mbah Sastro yang saat itu juga military ๐ŸŽ–️ ๐Ÿช–). Hari berikutnya banyak pengawal pribadi Soekarno ditangkap dan dimasukkan ke lubang buaya. Eyang saya diselamatkan oleh kakaknya!
