Why Türkiye Feels So Layered 🧩 28 Mei 2026

Modern Türkiye contains:

  • Greek history 🏺
  • Roman history 🏛️
  • Byzantine history ✝️
  • Ottoman history ☪️
  • Modern Turkish culture 🇹🇷

That’s why traveling there can feel like walking through multiple civilizations at once.

Gladiator fights were more strongly associated with the ancient city of Great Theatre of Ephesus than the theater in Hierapolis Ancient Theatre.

The Great Theatre of Ephesus was actually used for gladiator combats during Roman times, in addition to plays and political events. Archaeologists even discovered a gladiator graveyard near Ephesus. (geomerid.com)

Pamukkale’s ancient theater (Hierapolis Theatre) was mainly known for performances, ceremonies, and public gatherings. While Roman entertainment existed there too, Ephesus is the place most famously connected with gladiators in that region.

Ephesus is one of the rare ancient cities where archaeologists found strong physical evidence of gladiators:

  • A gladiator cemetery was discovered nearby.
  • Skeletons showed battle injuries and surgical treatment.
  • Gladiator inscriptions and reliefs were found around the city.

This means gladiator culture there was not just legend — it was real daily entertainment during Roman times.

So when you visited places like Ephesus or Pamukkale, you were not seeing “Roman-inspired” places — you were standing inside actual Roman civilization.

Anatolia 🌍

Anatolia is the large peninsula that makes up most of modern Türkiye.
It is also called Asia Minor in older historical texts.

Basically:

  • European side of Türkiye = small part near İstanbul 🌉

  • Anatolia = the huge Asian side of Türkiye 🌏

So when people say:

“The Seljuks entered Anatolia”

they mean:

“They entered the lands of modern-day Türkiye.”

Why Anatolia Is So Important 🏛️✨

Anatolia sits between:

  • Europe 🌍

  • Asia 🌏

  • Middle East 🐪

Because of this location, countless civilizations passed through it for thousands of years.

Ancient Civilizations in Anatolia 🧩

Some major civilizations there included:

  • Hittites ⚔️

  • Ancient Greeks 🏺

  • Romans 🏛️

  • Byzantines ✝️

  • Seljuks ☪️

  • Ottomans 👑

That’s why Türkiye has such deep historical layers.

Famous Places in Anatolia 📍

Western Anatolia:

  • Ephesus

  • Pergamon

  • Hierapolis

Central Anatolia:

  • Cappadocia 🎈

  • Ancient underground cities

Eastern Anatolia:

  • mountains 🏔️

  • old trade routes 🐪

  • ancient fortresses

Fun Fact 🤯

When ancient Romans talked about “going east,”
many times they meant Anatolia.

And when medieval Europeans talked about crusades, many battles happened there too ⚔️

So Anatolia has been one of the world’s major crossroads for:

  • trade 🚢

  • religion ✝️☪️

  • wars ⚔️

  • empires 👑

  • migration 🐎

for thousands of years.

I had a dream that banyak bangunan melengkung dan di tengahnya taman ( 2016 ).. 10 years before I come to Turkiye...

That imagery does resemble architecture often associated with ancient Mediterranean, Roman, Byzantine, or Ottoman regions 🌿🏛️

“Bangunan melengkung” (arched buildings) with a central garden or courtyard were very common in:

  • Roman villas 🏛️

  • Byzantine complexes ✨

  • Ottoman architecture ☪️

  • caravanserais and palaces along Anatolia’s trade routes 🐪

Places in Türkiye — especially older historical areas — often have:

  • arches,

  • colonnades,

  • inner courtyards,

  • fountains,

  • and gardens in the middle.

Even many traditional houses and mosques in Anatolia were designed around peaceful central courtyards 🌿

A room ( master room) on the right side. On the left side ( deeper area) there was a kid room. And next of it is the plengkungan and taman

That sounds very much like a courtyard-style architectural layout 🌿🏛️

The way you describe it:

  • a main/master room on one side,

  • deeper private rooms on another side,

  • then arches (“plengkungan”),

  • and a garden/courtyard in the center or beyond,

resembles designs historically found in:

  • Mediterranean homes 🌊

  • Roman villas 🏛️

  • Ottoman mansions ☪️

  • Andalusian/Middle Eastern courtyard houses ✨

These buildings were often designed around an inner garden because:

  • it kept the house cooler 🌿

  • created privacy,

  • brought light into the rooms ☀️

  • and symbolized harmony and peace.
