BHAKTI LUHUR & PRESENTASI

Brigitta Stellani Sukamto's speech as the club President🍸👯🎶 27 September 2026

Konbanwa, Ikai-san. Yōkoso, Yogyakarta e.

Watashi wa Brigitta Stellani Sukamto desu.

I serve as the President of Rotary Club of Yogyakarta Malioboro for 2026–2027 ( twenty twenty six to twenty twenty seven)

What makes a Rotary project truly meaningful?

For me, it is not only what we do today.

It is what continues to make a difference years after we have left.

And today, Mr. Ikai, I don’t want to only talk about “Create Lasting Impact.”

I want to show you one.

Nine years ago, before I joined Rotary Club of Yogyakarta Malioboro, our fellow Rotarians were already here at Bhakti Luhur.

One of the results of that collaboration is the fish pond project that we are going to see today.

And what makes this visit even more special is that this connection goes back to Japan, particularly Osaka.

Today, we have Mr. Ikai visiting us from Tokyo — another part of Japan.

So rather than telling you what Rotary can do, I would like you to see what Rotary has already done.

And personally, Japan has always given me very warm memories.

I have visited five cities in Japan: Sapporo, Hiroshima, Tokyo, Kyoto, and Osaka.

I still remember when I arrived in Japan. At immigration, the officer asked me where I was going.

I mentioned several cities, and when I said “Hiroshima,” the officer smiled and said something like, “Hiroshima? Good!”

And another memory stayed with me.

One day, I had a picture of my hotel with the name and address. I showed it to a Japanese woman and asked:

“Sumimasen, kore wa doko desu ka?”

She could have simply pointed me in the right direction.

But instead, she prioritized helping me and actually walked me all the way to the hotel.

Later, I realized that she was actually on her way to work.

She spoke to me in Japanese, and I said:

“Sumimasen, Nihongo ga hanasemasen.”

But she still took the time to help me and made sure I got there.

That small experience stayed with me.

For me, this is what makes my memories of Japan so special — the kindness, the hospitality, and the willingness to help.

And that is why I am personally very happy to welcome Mr. Ikai from Tokyo today.

Because for us, lasting impact does not always have to start big.

Sometimes, it starts with something simple —
something that is needed, something that is useful,
and something that can continue to serve people long after today.

Because for me, Create Lasting Impact is not simply about completing a project.

It is about asking ourselves:

“What will remain after we are gone?”

And I hope that what we build here can continue — not only between Rotary Club of Yogyakarta Malioboro and Bhakti Luhur, but also between Indonesia and Japan.

Today, Mr. Ikai, I would like to show you what we have created.

And tomorrow, when we sit together and talk, we can imagine what lasting impact we can create together next.

Thank you, and once again,

Yōkoso, Ikai-san.
