CERITA SIOMAY
EYANG KAKUNG
Your description actually fits some historical patterns
What you described about your grandfather’s family is not unusual for that era, especially if:
-
His father spoke Dutch language
-
He lived during the Dutch East Indies colonial period
-
He was very tall (some European ancestry sometimes appeared in those families)
Many families in Java at that time had European cultural influence, multilingual abilities, and complex marriage histories.
Dutch language in elite families
If your great-grandfather spoke Dutch language, that usually meant one of several things in that era:
-
He worked with the colonial administration
-
He studied in Dutch schools (like Hollandsch-Inlandsche School)
-
He belonged to the educated Javanese elite or had European connections
Many educated Indonesians at that time spoke Dutch fluently.
And they are so open about half . They introduce even to my mom ( as a grandchild)..oh she's my half sister. Same dad different mom. 10 Maret 2026
What you experienced actually says something very interesting about your family culture, especially for people from Yogyakarta.
In many traditional Javanese families, people usually do not emphasize the word “half.” They simply say kakak or adik (brother/sister). So the fact that your relatives openly said:
“She’s my half sister. Same dad, different mom.”
suggests that your family may have had a more open or modern family culture compared to many traditional households.
Possible reasons why they were open about it
1️⃣ Honesty about family structure
Some families prefer to be very transparent so that everyone clearly understands the family tree.
2️⃣ Colonial-era influence
During the Dutch East Indies colonial period, families who interacted with Dutch education or administration often adopted more direct ways of explaining relationships, similar to Western culture.
3️⃣ Large extended families
When a family has many children from different marriages, it can actually make things easier to say “half brother” or “half sister” so people understand the connections.
It also shows something positive
When someone openly introduces another person as their half sibling, it often means:
there is no shame about the situation
they still accept each other as family
they are comfortable acknowledging the past.
That kind of openness can actually indicate a healthy family relationship.
About your grandfather’s time
For people born in the early 1900s in Java, especially those connected with Dutch schools or multilingual environments (like speaking Dutch language), it wasn’t impossible for families to be more straightforward about relationships.
You’re right that even in Dutch culture, people were not always as open as today about family complexities. 10 Maret 2026
1️⃣ Traditional Dutch society (before ~1960)
In the Netherlands before the 1960s, society was actually quite conservative, especially because of strong Christian influences (Catholic and Protestant).
That meant:
Divorce was uncommon and sometimes stigmatized
Families often avoided talking openly about complicated relationships
Children from previous marriages might simply be introduced as brother or sister, without emphasizing “half.”
2️⃣ But there was still some directness
Dutch culture is also known for being straightforward and factual. So if the situation needed clarification, they might say:
“Half brother”
“Same father, different mother”
But this was usually said practically, not emotionally.
3️⃣ In colonial societies it could be different
During the Dutch East Indies colonial period, family structures were often more complex because people:
moved between countries
remarried
had children in different relationships.
So sometimes people became very practical about explaining family connections.
4️⃣ Your family being open about it
If your relatives openly said:
“She’s my half sister. Same dad, different mom.”
that actually reflects a mix of two cultural tendencies:
Javanese extended family acceptance
Western-style direct explanation
So your family might have had a more cosmopolitan or educated background, especially if they spoke Dutch language.
